Summer events have a more optimistic vibe and outlook than a year ago.

COVID-19 cases are down nationally. Vaccinations have continued with booster shots. Masks mandates have ended. Dr. Anthony Fauci says the country is out of the pandemic phase.

And summertime in Stark County will more closely resemble the pre-pandemic days.

Festivals, concerts and other events are back with fewer protocols — or none in some cases. And events like the Stark County Italian-American Festival will return after canceling entirely a year ago.

Here's a rundown of major events where local residents can go to eat, drink and have fun in the summer of 2022:

African American Arts Festival

The African American Arts Festival in Canton is expected to be bigger the second year at a bigger venue and with a new 5K run.

The event is July 22 and 23 at Centennial Plaza in downtown Canton. The EN-RICH-MENT Fine Arts Academy 5K will be at 9 a.m. starting in downtown Canton. More details will be released on both events.

The 5K event will include walkers who have lost loved ones to COVID, said Betty Smith, executive director of EN-RICH-MENT.

Vendors, food, music, dancing, a youth drumline and children's activities will be featured. Entertainment and performers will be announced.
